Is you core strong enough?

How might you know if your core needs a little strengthening....?

1 You're in pain. Back pain, shoulder pain, neck aches, knee pain, hip pain etc, can all signal a lack of support in the body - your core is the first line of defence for improving the balance of the muscles, the smooth tracking of the skeleton, and support for the spine and postural muscles. Low support from the core can mean a "picking up of the slack" elsewhere = overuse = pain.

2 Recurring injuries. Injuries are usually a result of wear and tear - see above! A bit of stretching can often provide temporary relief, you feel good to go again, and then it comes back. That's an example of treating the pain but not the root cause. Your core strength will provide balance and efficiency of movement = less overuse and less risk of injury.

3 - Incontinence. Stress, urgency, frequency can all relate to the proper function of the core and pelvic floor. Figuring out how to engage well and often will help to treat the symptoms of incontinence.

4 Poor posture. Your core holds you up, supports your spine, lifts your ribs and allows your neck and shoulders to sit in the correct position. If you're noticing a change in posture or aches in your upper body, your core should be your first stop.

5 You're desk based. See above - sitting for long periods of time can leave you slouched and rounded through the spine - this equals tight hips, a back that overworks and a core that is lazy. Your posture will be impacted but you may able notice some aches and pains.

6 Menopause. Your muscle mass reduces dramatically in midlife. so from 40 onwards you will notice a reduction in strength throughout the body - that includes pelvic floor and core. If your body shape is changing this could be why.

And so what can you do about it..?
