How much Pilates should I do?

I have been asked a few times recently about how much Pilates we should be doing to get results.  My answers are varied because the advice i'd give really depends on the goal you have but here is a rule of thumb...

 

REHAB - overcoming an injury or stretching and strengthening an area for pain relief

3x SHORT SESSIONS PER WEEK is the minimum I would recommend, if you can get up to 5 times you'll see faster results. Consistency is key, so daily stretching or 3 x 20 minute pilates sessions each week will give the best outcome.

MAINTENANCE - keeping injuries at bay, maintaining some flexibility and keeping on top of body awareness, proprioception and control.

MIN 1x HOUR PER WEEK.

STRENGTH BUILDING / TONING 

Whether you are doing pilates or another strength workout, any real change requires a consistent approach - more than 3x HOURS PER WEEK would be recommended to see change.

NEW STARTER 

If you have joined a membership or class, aim for 2x SESSIONS PER WEEK so that when you go back to class the details feel fresh and you haven't forgotten everything between sessions. Core connection and body awareness need to be trained to switch on, this takes more than an occasional class.

JOINT PAIN / BODY ACHES

If you get up in the morning with lower back ache or joint pain, or you spend hours at a desk, please look into a daily dose of movement. 15-20 MINUTES 3-5 x PER WEEK of pilates or stretching will be game changing for you.
