5 Minute Session to Test Your Balance in Midlife
Nov 18, 2021
Balance is such an important aspect of our health - balance in our minds, balance within our bodies, and balance in our relationships. But how good is your physical balance and why is it important?
If you try this session, I urge you to do it more than once, the first time paying full attention to follow me and listen to the cues, and the second time, just listening but without watching.
The first time will be wobbly, but the second time will be the truer test of your balance as you won't be distracted by having to follow me.

Watch out for a few things...
How different the 2 sides are, is one side stronger or more stable?
How easily do you remain stable and in control?
How easily you let go of the support structure - core! Do you use your core and pelvic floor or do you revert to shoulders and backs?
Does this frustrate you, are you likely to lose the will after a few seconds of wobbling?
When you have noticed all of the below, remember the following:
- Balance will take time to build and there is no shame in using support initially whilst you are working on it.
- Balance will not develop from just practicing balancing! You need to be working to build strength in all the stabilising muscles to create a support scaffolding for your balance.
- Developing your strength in balance will be the most important thing you can do for your body as you age - it will mean less likelihood for falls, breaks in older age, and more chance of a long and independent future.
